READ THIS ALOUD: One breakfast, Matt ate toast WITHOUT A PLATE. Richard watched the crumbs pile up around him and said, "That's crumbelievable."Not a word. But his brain had mashed "crumbs" and "unbelievable" together and made one. Now we say it all the time.

We made up so many that we put them in a book: Ickypedia: A Dictionary of Disgusting Words (see videos below for examples)

Your family has words too. Words only you use. Go and find them and make a…

FAMILY DICTIONARY

Activity: Make up a bunch of new words

Grown ups: Maybe you already have some words in your ‘family dictionary’. Are there words that only your family uses? Have a think together.

What you need:

  • A notebook (this is your FAMILY ICKYPEDIA now)

  • Pens

  • Your family, and their brains and their mouths and their eyes to look at things.

  • A toilet roll - you can never be too careful.

There are lots of ways to make up a word. Here are some different ways to make up word.

1.Smash two words together (the proper word for this is a port-mantau)
Crumbs + unbelievable = Crumbelievable
Crying + laughing = Craughing
Scary + exciting = Scar-citing
Beautiful + Poo = Poo-tiful

2. Make up a completely new word and give it a meaning

Bzzrunk — the noise a fridge makes after you close it.
Smunge — the grey stuff that collects in a plug hole
Frobble — the walk you do after you spin around too many times.

The Spin-a-nator: The Microwave.

3.Take a word and swap part of it for something that rhymes
YouTube = Eeeewtube — the internet's most disgusting website
Sunscreen = Fun-screen — a screen that is actually fun

The Dawn Mower - the man down the road who mows his lawn in the morning.

4. Write your word down. Write what it means. Draw a picture if you want.
